S1.4 Material Science - Arcology Self-Sustainable Progression Chart
by Star Captain Dread
The Arcology Self-Sustainability Progression chart presents independence as a layered development process, beginning with the biological and environmental necessities required to sustain human life. At the foundational level, the arcology establishes closed loops for food, soil, vegetation, water, air, waste, environmental control, and habitable living space. Rather than merely storing these resources, the goal is to continually regenerate them: organic waste becomes compost and nutrients, plants produce food and oxygen, water is recovered and purified, atmospheric gases are recycled, and biological diversity helps maintain resilient agricultural ecosystems. Once these essential cycles become reliable, the arcology can expand its internal ecology through greater crop diversity, aquaculture, seed banks, soil regeneration, and increasingly sophisticated life-support systems.
Higher levels extend this same closed-loop principle from biology into energy, industry, manufacturing, and materials. The arcology develops renewable power generation and storage, resource recovery, chemical processing, fabrication, robotics, and the capacity to recycle progressively more complex materials such as polymers, glass, ceramics, composites, metals, alloys, electronics, and construction materials. Ultimately, these pre-elemental material cycles provide the industrial foundation for elemental integration, where the arcology can recover, separate, store, recombine, and manufacture using an expanding range of chemical elements. Self-sustainability can therefore be measured not simply by what LANDSHIPYARD-ZERO possesses, but by how many essential resource cycles it can maintain internally without continuous outside resupplyβproviding a measurable pathway from basic survival, to ecological independence, to industrial independence, and eventually toward a truly closed-loop Arcology civilization.
