Project Overview
Biosphere 2 is primarily a research and education facility focused on Earth systems science, closed ecological systems, climate resilience, and sustainability.
History of Biosphere 2
Biosphere 2 was founded/construction started 1984–1987 by Space Biospheres Ventures;
First closure missions 1991–1994;
Biosphere 2 was later managed by Columbia University ~1996–2003
Biosphere 2 was acquired by the University of Arizona in 2011
Biosphere 2 main outputs are scientific publications, datasets, books/reports, and educational materials. Research shifted from original closed-system human habitation experiments to open-system studies on climate change, ecosystems, and resilience under UA management.
